PRESS RELEASE

Statement: Gender-Affirming Care

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DelKCallsen@house.virginia.gov

On January 30, 2025, Attorney General Jason Miyares dispatched a letter to Virginia public university health systems directing their compliance with President Trump's Executive Order 14187 and requiring the suspension of gender-affirming care for individuals under 19. This is deeply troubling and reflects a broader, dangerous trend of curtailing essential healthcare for vulnerable communities. This policy not only undermines the mental health and well‐being of transgender youth but also exacerbates risks like anxiety and suicide.

By restricting access to medically necessary treatments that affirm a young person’s gender identity, such actions send a harmful message that transgender lives are less valued—a stance that stands in stark opposition to the needs and values of our community.

I remain steadfast in my commitment to work with legislators and community allies to restore comprehensive, affirming care for all Virginians regardless of age, ensuring every individual has the opportunity to live authentically. For those in crisis or seeking support, please know you are not alone. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 (or 1‑800‑273‑8255) or text HOME to 741741. Additionally, local support is available through organizations like the Rainbow Youth Project at (317) 643‑4888, where trained professionals offer compassionate assistance and guidance.
