Affordable Housing

Access to affordable housing is a fundamental human right, and I believe that every Virginian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. However, for too long, our state has struggled to provide affordable housing options for all its citizens. As a delegate, I will prioritize investing in affordable housing to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable housing.

Here are some of the ways I plan to invest in affordable housing:

  1. Increase Funding for Affordable Housing Programs: As a delegate, I will work to increase funding for affordable housing programs, such as the Virginia Housing Trust Fund, which provides financial assistance for the development of affordable housing. By increasing funding for these programs, we can help more Virginians access safe and affordable housing.

  1. Incentivize Affordable Housing Development: I will work to create incentives for developers to build affordable housing. This could include tax credits, grants, and zoning changes that prioritize affordable housing development. We could offset utility hookups and infrastructure development at the state level. By creating these incentives, we can encourage developers to build more affordable housing units across Virginia.

  1. Increase Support for Homeownership: Homeownership is a key way to build wealth and stability. I will work to increase support for programs that help low-income families and first-time homebuyers access homeownership opportunities, such as down payment assistance and low-interest loans.

  1. Protect Renters’ Rights: I will work to protect renters’ rights by strengthening tenant protections, such as prohibiting eviction without just cause and ensuring that landlords make necessary repairs and do not make unreasonable and unannounced rises in rent. Any increases in rent should have to be in writing well in advance. By protecting renters’ rights, we can help ensure that all Virginians have access to safe and affordable housing.

  1. Address Homelessness: Homelessness is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive approach. As a delegate, I will work to increase funding for homelessness prevention and support services, such as rapid rehousing and supportive housing programs. By addressing homelessness, we can help ensure that all Virginians have access to safe and stable housing.

Investing in affordable housing is not only the right thing to do, it also makes economic sense. Access to safe and affordable housing helps people maintain stable employment, improve their health, and build stronger communities. As a delegate, I will prioritize investments to ensure that all Virginians have access to quality, affordable housing.
